Web Censorship Act Flies Through Senate Committee

The Democrats are doing their damnedest to pass as much as they can in the lame duck session. The Food Safety Act is already being pushed for a vote, and it will destroy the family farm and organic farmers. Now the Internet Censorship Act, which will give the federal government the power to remove your Web site without ever going to court to determine your innocence or guilt. There will be no due process to protect you or your Web site in other words. Imagine the power of those in government you speak out against to close down your efforts.

On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved a bill that would give the Attorney General the right to shut down websites with a court order if copyright infringement is deemed “central to the activity” of the site — regardless if the website has actually committed a crime. The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) is among the most draconian laws ever considered to combat digital piracy, and contains what some have called the “nuclear option,” which would essentially allow the Attorney General to turn suspected websites “off.”
