A Victory for the TSA?: TSA Claims National Opt Out Day Fizzled but...

The TSA's blog basically claims the National Opt Out Day fizzled, and they claim Americans were more than willing comply with the naked body scanners. However, numerous travelers report the scanners were turned off yesterday. Now New Jersey.com offers even more insight into why National Opt Out Day fizzled. It fizzled because the TSA turned off the scanners.

The choice between a "virtual strip search" and a "grope" was strictly academic Wednesday for most holiday travelers flying out of Newark Liberty International Airport.

The majority of Newark’s full-body scanners were idle throughout much of the day, depriving most passengers of the chance to opt out of the controversial screening procedure even if they had wanted to.

Now the real question is, if Americans can fly safely on the busiest day of the year without these scanners, then why even have them? It's obvious the TSA played a game yesterday to avoid confrontation with protesters, but in doing so they basically tell us these weren't ever about security but rather compliance.
