Toys for Tots Marine, Cpl. Phillip Duggan, Stabbed on on Black Friday for Stopping a Shop Lifter

Nothing removes the holiday spirit in me more than Black Friday. We are willing to show how much the Christmas season has become a season of self-indulgence with no recollection of the reason for the season. Christmas is about love, and it's not about the 50-yard dash to get the lowest prices on junk made in China.

Fortunately, organizations like the United States Marines help me get back into the spirit with their Toys for Tots program. One of my favorite scenes of Christmas is a Marine in his dress blues, one of the deadliest killing machines in this world, reach out to a child with a toy. It really is a touching scene when you consider the dichotomy of the warrior and the humanitarian.

Unfortunately, the Toys for Tots season didn't start off to good for one Marine. Corporal Phillip Duggan was stabbed in the back when he assisted in helping apprehend a shop lifter at the Best Buy in Augusta, Georgia. The man that stabbed Corporal Duggan was trying to shoplift a laptop computer, box and all, underneath his jacket.

Best Buy employees confronted the man, and he ran for the door where four of the nation's finest were outside collecting toys.
