Would You Buy a 2011 Model Commodore 64?
Remember the Commodore 64? It was the replacement for the William Shatner endorsed Vic 20, which was a 5K memory machine. In other words, the C64 was a huge upgrade for Commodore users. I never thought I would see the day when you could buy a new one in the stores. Apparently, someone felt there is a need for them in today's computer market.
Just like the Atari 2600 made a comeback in various forms with is blocky graphics, it looks the Commodore 64 will follow.
The Commodore 64 will ship this summer, at a range of price points: $250 for a "Barebones" shell; $595 for a working base unit; and about $900 for an "Ultimate" edition C64, with a 1TB hard drive and Blu-Ray capability. All the Commodore machines will run the Ubuntu OS, and have the added bonus of giving you massive amounts of retro hipster cred. But is the Commodore 64 really worth a few hundred bucks?
So it's not your grandpappy's Commodore 64! It's a powerful computer with modern hardware to go along dressed up in the classic Commodore 64 body. Still, will it sell considering it's strange operating system, Ubuntu OS, and its price. You can buy Windows netbooks for much cheaper.
The Commodore USA Web site boasts the new C64 will run all modern PC software, so perhaps, it's really not that bad. I wonder if you have to connect to the Internet using the boxy plastic modem. Not only that, but it will run Windows 7 as well, if you want to load it. It's kind of cool.
