The Federal Government is about to get more control over the nation's food supply, and twelve Republicans are helping this bill get closer to reality. Twelve Republicans voted to bring the Food Safety Modernization Act to debate in the Senate on yesterday.
This bill will put more restrictions on small to medium sized farms who work to keep food safe from GMO companies like Monsanto. In fact, let's call this bill what it is, this is the Monsanto Act, and it will work against Americans who want to ensure they are eating healthier foods that aren't mutated. The bill actually creates huge fines for organic farmers and even goes as far as regulating your family garden. This bill will make buying organic foods from farmers market tougher, and will probably drive up the costs so much that it may discourage you from purchasing foods from the farmers markets.
The bill gives greater oversight to organic foods while giving companies like Monsanto a pass, since it doesn't require companies to label the food as a GMO.
All Senate Democrats exept Ben Nelson pushed for more federal control over the nation's food supply (in the name of "safety") and twelve Republicans who broke rank and voted with the Democrats.
They include Olympia Snow and Lamar Alexander.
